From Classrooms to Communities
Environmental Education · School Outreach · Zero Waste Action
Initiative Overview
Between 13 December and 26 December 2025, Him Village ePrahari Foundation conducted Thermocol (EPS) Awareness Sessions in collaboration with Shrunkhala Organisation for Sustainable Development.
These sessions were held at Government Primary School, Gangdaspur, Bahadrabad, Haridwar, focusing on environmental literacy, health awareness, and responsible waste management among young students.
Current Status
- ✅ Awareness sessions successfully conducted in December 2025
- ✅ Students actively engaged through interactive learning
- 🔄 More Thermocol awareness sessions planned in upcoming days
This initiative is ongoing and will continue to expand to more schools and communities across Haridwar and nearby regions.
Why Thermocol Awareness?
Thermocol (Expanded Polystyrene) is commonly used in packaging, decorations, and disposable products. While lightweight and convenient, it poses serious environmental, health, and wildlife risks when mismanaged.
Environmental Impact
Non-biodegradable material that persists in soil and water bodies, including the Ganga, for hundreds of years.
🫁 Health Hazards
Burning Thermocol releases toxic gases such as Carbon Monoxide and Styrene vapours causing respiratory and neurological damage.
Wildlife Threat
Animals often ingest Thermocol mistaking it for food, leading to choking, poisoning, and death.
Important Clarification:
Thermocol is 100% recyclable when collected, segregated,
and sent to specialized recycling facilities.
The problem is not the material — it is irresponsible disposal.
What Students Learned
- Difference between biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste
- Dangers of open burning of waste
- Safe reuse and recycling of Thermocol
- 3R Principle — Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
- How children can influence waste practices at home
Students were encouraged to become “HimSathi” — Environmental Sentinels within their families and neighbourhoods.

Sessions were interactive, child-friendly, and activity-based, ensuring meaningful engagement and understanding.
