Our Story

Protecting the Himalayas is not just about managing waste. It is about protecting communities, forests, wildlife, water sources, and the sacred Ganga River that connects millions of lives across India.

Himalayas

The Himalayas: More Than Mountains

The Himalayas are often called the β€œWater Tower of Asia,” but for the communities living in these mountains, they are much more than that. The Himalayas are their home, their source of water, their livelihoods, their culture, and their future.

Every forest, stream, and river in the region is deeply connected to the lives of local people.

Ganga

Where the Ganga Begins

From the glaciers of the Himalayas begins the sacred journey of the Ganga River, flowing approximately 2,525 kilometers through Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.

What happens in the Himalayan villages does not stay in the Himalayas. It eventually affects the entire Ganga basin and the millions of people who depend on it.

Waste Challenge

A Growing Challenge

During our treks and visits to remote Himalayan villages, we observed a growing problem.

As tourism and packaged products increased, waste generation increased rapidly. However, most villages had no structured waste management systems of their own.

Families were often left with only two options:

  • Burn the waste
  • Dump it into forests, streams and valleys
Foundation Start

Our Response

This reality inspired Him Village ePrahari Foundation to act.

We launched the Zero Waste Village Initiative in Ganga Bhogpur Village, near Rajaji National Park, with a simple belief:

Himalayan communities deserve a third option beyond burning and dumping waste.
Community Action

Building Solutions Together

Working hand-in-hand with villagers, women’s groups, youth volunteers, and community leaders, we developed a grassroots waste management model.

Future

Protecting the Future

In just 25 months, we have responsibly managed more than 10,000+ kilograms of waste, preventing it from reaching forests, streams and ultimately the Ganga.

More importantly, we have shown that when communities are empowered with the right tools and support, they become the strongest guardians of the Himalayas.

Our vision is simple yet ambitious:

A Zero-Waste Himalaya by 2035

25 Months of Continuous Action

Building a community-driven Zero Waste Village model in the Himalayas, one step at a time.
